Michigan Camporee

image

The Michigan International Camporee, hosted by the Chief Okemos Council, Boy Scouts of America, is the largest council-run multinational Scouting event in North America.

Once every four years, contingents of Scouts, both all boys and mixed boys and girls, from over 20 countries, gather for 8 days of international friendship and fellowship at the Chief Okemos Council’s Northwoods Scout Reservation.  The next Michigan International Camporee is scheduled for Sunday, July 22, to Sunday, July 29, 2012, with home stays for international contingents with mid-Michigan families the week before.

The Michigan International Camporee (MIC) is a unique event in North America.  Compared to some jamborees, it is a relatively small event, with well under 1,000 participants.  That allows participants to get to know each other.  However, over 1/3 of the youth participants at a Michigan International Camporee are from outside of North America.  Participating Scouts and Venturers not only meet U.S. and Canadian Scouts.  They meet and get to know Scouts from all over the world.

What will make the 2012 Michigan International Camporee (MIC) different than most international Scout camps is the way Scouts from different countries will be included in each camporee troop and in each camporee patrol.  Camping for a week as part of an international troop and an international patrol will give each Scout unique opportunities to learn about other countries and other cultures and to make new international friends.  With a total of approximately 500 youth participants, the entire camp will be small enough that each Scout will be able to meet and get to know Scouts from all the other countries that will be represented.

The approximately 500 youth participants in MIC 2012 will be divided into camporee troops of approximately 40 Scouts each, 16 Scouts from Michigan, 8 from some other state or some province of Canada, and 16 from one or more countries outside the United States and Canada.  All the Scouts in each troop will participate as a group in many of the camporee activities.

Scouting Radio hope to broadcast all the news and information from the camporee. Keep listening for more!
